Here are a couple random questions for you guys to ponder on this fine Tuesday:
- Were any of you bullied growing up? If so, what is your relationship with that person(s) now that you’re an adult?
- Were any of you a bully growing up? If so, do you still have contact with the people you bullied? Were you able to mend fences?
I’d love to hear your responses in the comments section!

Guest Week (Yeah, This Is Happening)
August 12th, 2010 | by THEWesMolebashLast week I put out the call for some guest strips with no real date in mind for a guest week. I pretty much wanted to store them up for a rainy day. Well, I’ve received a few strips and I have a few “interested parties”, and I’ve decided I’m gonna cash these babies in a little earlier than I thought.
As I’ve previously discussed on the blog, I’m getting married on August 28. Everyday leading up to the wedding has gotten busier and busier, and lately there have been a few unexpected circumstances (CAR REPAIRS!) that have thrown wrenches in the already hectic schedule. Everything is working itself out just fine, but it’d be nice to scoot something off my plate during this busy time. Beginning on Monday, August 23, I’m going to take two weeks off from Max vs. Max so I can focus on wedding plans and the like. I’ll return to the comic on Monday, September 6.
During my vacation I’d like to run some of the guest strips I’ve received. I still need at least 2 more guest strips to fill out the two week break, so here are the details if you’d like to participate:
Send your guest strips to me at wes (at) maxvsmax (dot) com and use Guest Strip Submission as the subject. If you do not use Guest Strip Submission as the subject, then it is likely your submission will get buried in my inbox never to be seen again.
Save your comics as .PNG or .GIF files and make sure they are 980 pixels wide. I don’t care how tall they are. They can be black-and-white, color, grayscale . . . whatever. Draw my comic the way YOU would draw my comic.
I don’t really care what you write about or what characters you feature. I do ask that you keep it fairly clean (PG or PG-13).
Please include any links and pertinent information about your blog/comic strip/website in the body of your email. I want to send you some link love for helping me out, and I won’t be able to do that if you don’t give me a URL.
That’s it, basically. If you have any questions, just leave ‘em in the comments section. Thanks to everyone who has already sent in a strip or expressed interest!

About two weeks ago I mentioned that I was going to try using different ink in my Pentel Pocket Brush by transferring Sumi ink into an empty Pocket Brush cartridge. I wasn’t sure if it would work, but I’m here today to tell you that it was a success! I’ve been using the pen regularly since the “surgery”, and I haven’t experienced any problems with the new ink clogging up my brush or getting crusty, and – best of all – NO BLEEDING! I thought I would briefly outline the process of “ink transfer” for any of you artists who’d like to give it a try. Feel free to ask questions in the comments section!
1.) I removed the empty cartridge from my Pocket Brush and I held it upside-down so that the opening was pointed up toward the ceiling.
2.) Using the ink dropper from my bottle of Higgins Black Magic, I slowly filled the empty Pocket Brush cartridge with the Sumi ink.
3.) I filled the cartridge up to a quarter-of-an-inch from the opening. If you are filling a Pocket Brush cartridge, there’s actually a small line/groove that goes around the cartridge about a quarter-inch below (or above, depending how you’re holding it) the opening. Do not fill past this point or you will spill ink everywhere when you put the brush back together!
4.) Once the cartridge was refilled with ink, I put the brush back together by turning the bottom portion of the brush upside-down and placed it directly on top of the up-turned cartridge. If you insert the cartridge right-side up like normal you’ll make a huge mess!
5.) I screwed the top back on, and started making some drawlings!
Notes: Using the dropper from my Higgins Black Magic bottle proved to be very messy. I didn’t have much control and I had to follow a pattern of “squirt ink – let it settle – squirt ink – let it settle – squirt ink – blah, blah, blah”. Next time I might try to use a syringe a la Katie Cook’s Prismacolor Marker hack. If it’s the first time using different ink in your pen, it may take a short while for you to notice a difference in ink quality. I think there’s more ink stored in the bottom of the pen than it would appear.
