Today is the “launch day” of my new comic strip series, Max vs. Max! I’m so psyched to be writing and drawing this strip, and I really feel like I’m turning out some of my best work with this particular cartoon. I’ve got well over two months worth of strips scripted out, and I’ve got two weeks worth of strips uploaded to the site at the time of this writing! I’m really on a roll and the drawing is coming quite naturally. Fortunately, it hasn’t taken long to get back into the swing of things!
Make sure to tune in every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a new strip! In the meantime, feel free to leave comments on the blog and the comic strip (you can make comments directly to the comic strip on the left side of the homepage), and make sure to hit me up on Facebook and Twitter! You can also help spread the word by tossing a link to Max vs. Max in your blog or on your social networking site of choice!
Thanks for stopping by!
- Wes
FYI: I think I confused a few people with this blog post, and I apologize. I DO have two weeks worth of strips uploaded, but you people won’t see those strips until their scheduled publishing dates. It’s safer to say I’m two weeks ahead of schedule, I guess. Sorry for the confusion! :)

I approve.
Thanks, man! I appreciate your approval! :)
Must I wait until Wednesday for more? Well, I suppose I can manage to wait. Looking forward to more of the story, Wes. Also looking forward to the continued wardrobing of Zakk.
Zakk should be getting some new accessories anytime now!
Off to a nice start!
Very cool. I like the look of this new strip. The art looks a little different from stuff you’ve done before. Not that the old stuff was bad or anything…Interesting…
Thanks, guys!
Dave – Yeah, I’m trying to stretch myself a bit artistically. I decided to ditch the “square” heads and play with different head shapes for the various characters. I think it’ll make it easier draw facial expressions.
After seeing your first drawing on SCL a couple of weeks ago, I went through the entire YHT collection in an afternoon and was super disappointed when I reached the end. Love the premise for this one and can’t wait to see what happens next!
Thanks so much, Alicia! I hope you do stick around for awhile! I’ve got some fun themes that I’ll be playing around with over the next few weeks! :)
I’m excited to be able to be here from day 1, instead of two weeks before the strip ends (I seem to have a knack for that… but you’ll have that…).
Congrats on the new strip, and best of luck!
Thanks, Ramon! :)
I LOVE that the one dude in the cartoon is wearing a Five Iron Frenzy hoodie! I still own one of those myself ;)
P.S. Thanks for Zakk — he’s awesome!
Five Iron is still one of my fave bands. Glad you’re enjoying Zakk! I’ve been having a lot of fun drawing him!
While Katie and Andy will always have a special place in my heart, I’m super pumped for this comic!
Andy and Katie will always have a special place in my heart, as well. :)
about time. :)
Fantastic, Wes! So glad to see Max up and running. Looks like you’ve wasted no time here, thrusting us right into the middle of things with little explanation. It’s a bold choice and I’m curious to see how it plays out.
The title is an interesting one, and not what I expected from what little I knew of the strip beforehand. Could you talk about why you went the YHT route and didn’t name your protagonist after you?
I’ve noticed some pretty significant changes to the art style as well. It’s still recognizably done by you, but there’s an extra fluidity to your lines and shapes that I’m anxious to see develop over the course of the strip. Good move challenging yourself like this. Can’t wait to read more.
Thanks, Brock! I was, actually, going to name the character after me, but I decided that I wanted to separate myself from the comic character. Everything I create is semi-autobiographical, but I do take a lot of artistic liberties with the “history” of factual events for the strip. For that reason, I decided to name the character “Max” so people wouldn’t think that the comic is a direct representation of what’s going on in my life. Also, by detaching myself from the comic I think I’ll be able to avoid hurt feelings in my real-life relationships. :)
Wes,
Great to see you back writing and drawing comics. I really hope this one stays for a while because it stinks when there isn’t any fresh molebash cartoony goodness out there.
Thanks, Drew! This site wouldn’t be much fun if you weren’t hanging out. :)
I’m so excited for a new “Molebash” comic! Bring it on!
TONYYYYYYYYY! I love seeing old skool YHT peeps here!
best work you have done to date wes! looking forward to more :)
Thanks, David!
Smart move not naming the character after yourself, Wes. I made that mistake with my first comic strip, and it gets difficult to do anything artistically. Any time I wanted to do something, I would have to think “How would so and so feel about this…” It gets tough, and, especially when you’re doing something semiautobiographic, it hurts the overall product.

SO excited for this comic. You don’t even know!
Just the first strip looks fantastic! Can’t wait for more! :)
Thanks so much, Katie! I’m glad you’re psyched!
DJ – Thanks for backing me up on the naming-the-main-character-after-me issue. I know that I inadvertently offended a few friends with some of the actual-life situations in YHT, so I can’t imagine what kind of bridges I’d burn if I associated myself EVEN MORE with the comic characters!
